Easy Holiday DIY: Anise and Clove Oranges

December 15, 2011

Need an easy holiday decorating/gift project?  These anise and clove oranges are an old fashioned favorite.  Simply grab a few medium sized oranges and a jar of Star Anise and a jar of Cloves.  Push the Cloves in a decorative pattern into the oranges and accent with Star Anise.  Display the finished oranges together in a bowl – the fragrance is amazing – or wrap individual oranges in a 1/4 yard of sturdy tuile fabric and tie with a pretty ribbon.  These can be hung near a doorway for good luck, and presented as an elegant stocking stuffer.  In most cases, the oranges will dry out over time if they are covered about 60% or more with cloves, otherwise they are perishable.

In germany, kids make this in kindergarten and in elementary school! Very old-school and homely, i love it… But because of this, people here would probably not give it away as a gift. Like you maybe wouldn’t a macaroni necklace! ;-)

I used to make these all the time with my mom! I loved the smell. We would put them in our drawers to make out clothes smell just as yummy. We covered the oranges completely with cloves to help them dry out and last longer.
Thanks for bringing back memories.
