Once Upon A Cookie…

At the beginning of each season, our fab Creative Team throws a preview party to introduce the new pattern and new product styles to the entire staff at the cinda b® headquarters. We show everyone our trend boards, share the pattern inspiration, and answer any questions about the pattern or the new styles. And as with everything we do at cinda b, we try to have a lot of fun with it too!

When we introduced Verde Bonita, our new Spring Summer 2013 pattern, I thought that Verde Bonita cookies were a must for the party and decided that I’d be the one to make them (in all my spare time, haha).  Since I first discovered millefiori on a trip to Italy many years ago, I have been fascinated with the process and decided I’d try it using cookie dough to make the Verde Bonita medallion on a cookie. It was a total experiment. At times I feared it would be a total disaster, but thankfully, the cookies turned out well and I am excited to use the technique again in the future as the possibilities are endless.

Bakers, preset your ovens…

I started with the classic sugar cookie recipe my grandmother always made for me. The recipe is straight out of my grandmother’s well loved Betty Crocker Cookbook.

{tip}:  If you are short on time, don’t have a mixer, or just plain don’t like to bake, you can also use store bought slice and bake refrigerator sugar cookie dough for the exact same effect.  Just knead the food coloring into the dough and follow the rest of the instructions below.

After I made the dough, I separated it into thirds and used food coloring to dye 1/3 green, 1/3 turquoise and 1/3 navy (or as close to those three colors that I could get in cookie dough) to mimic Verde Bonita’s color scheme.  Then I set out to create a roll of cookie dough with an intricate pinwheel pattern.  First I rolled out a thin roll of navy dough. I then wrapped that initial roll in green dough. Then I wrapped that roll in a series of very skinny navy and turquoise rolls.

{tip}: Between each step, I placed all the rolls back into the freezer to keep them cold and pliable. I am not going to lie, it was a tedious process, but I had some good company (and a plate of veggies to snack on so I didn’t eat all the cookie dough)

Drum roll please…

So here are the baked cookies sitting next to my Verde Bonita phone case as they cooled.  They don’t look exactly like the pattern, but they do have the same essence — and they tasted pretty darn good too.  Not bad for my first attempt at this process if I do say so myself.

And here they are at our preview party.  Everyone was so impressed and couldn’t believe I made them myself. (Good thing I documented the process for the xo CB blog or I still think they might not believe me).
